Maharashtra is home to five of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Most pilgrims, however, plan a circuit of three that are close to each other and easy to cover in a single trip: Trimbakeshwar, Bhimashankar and Grishneshwar. If you want a ready, hassle-free plan, see our Maharashtra 3 Jyotirlinga tour package with pick-up from Pune and Mumbai.
The 3 Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra
1. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga (Nashik)
Trimbakeshwar is located near Nashik, at the foot of the Brahmagiri hills, where the Godavari river begins. The unique feature of this Jyotirlinga is that it has three faces, representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Many devotees also perform Kalsarp and Narayan Nagbali pujas here. Nashik city is about 30 km away.
2. Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga (Pune)
Bhimashankar sits in the Sahyadri range in Pune district, inside a forest area. It is one of the most scenic Jyotirlingas, with a peaceful trek-like approach and green surroundings, especially after the monsoon. It is roughly 122 km from Pune, so plan 3 to 4 hours of road travel.
3. Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar)
Grishneshwar, also called Ghrishneshwar, is the last Jyotirlinga in the list of twelve and is located at Verul, very close to the famous Ellora Caves. Because of this, devotees can combine darshan with sightseeing.
Where are they located?
| Jyotirlinga | Nearest city | Region |
|---|---|---|
| Trimbakeshwar | Nashik | North Maharashtra |
| Bhimashankar | Pune | Western Maharashtra |
| Grishneshwar | Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar | Marathwada |
Distances between these three are long, so read our detailed guide on the distance and route between the 3 Jyotirlinga.
What about the other two Jyotirlinga in Maharashtra?
The remaining two are Aundha Nagnath (Hingoli district) and Parli Vaijnath (Beed district). They are in the Marathwada region and need a separate plan, so many pilgrims add them later as a 5 Jyotirlinga circuit.
Which Jyotirlinga is most powerful?
All twelve Jyotirlingas are considered equally sacred in Hindu belief, and no one is officially “more powerful”. Devotees choose based on faith, a specific puja, or travel convenience. Trimbakeshwar is especially popular for pujas related to ancestors and planetary doshas.
How to plan the trip
Covering all three needs at least 2 days by road, and 3 days is much more comfortable with Shirdi and Shani Shingnapur on the way.
