The most important attraction in Puri, the Shree Jagannath Temple is a masterpiece of Kalinga architecture built in the 12th century. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Vishnu), this temple is one of the four sacred Char Dhams and stands 65 metres tall. The temple is famous for its Mahaprasad (holy food), daily rituals, and the annual Rath Yatra. Note: Entry is restricted to Hindus only.
One of the most famous beaches in India, Puri Beach stretches along the Bay of Bengal and is a favourite for both pilgrims and tourists. The Swargadwar area near the beach is considered sacred for performing last rites. The beach is perfect for morning walks, swimming, camel rides, and witnessing spectacular sunrises.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 35 km from Puri, the Konark Sun Temple is one of the greatest architectural wonders of India. Built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I, the temple is designed in the form of a gigantic chariot with 24 intricately carved stone wheels. The annual Konark Dance Festival held in December is an added cultural attraction.
Known as the Garden House of Lord Jagannath, the Gundicha Temple is the destination of the Rath Yatra procession each year. The deities reside here for nine days before returning to the main Jagannath Temple in the Bahuda Yatra (return procession).
Asia's largest coastal lagoon and a Ramsar Wetland site, Chilika Lake is located about 50 km from Puri. It is home to the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia, and the famous Kalijai Temple on an island. A boat ride on Chilika is a must-do experience.
A UNESCO-listed artisan village just 14 km from Puri, Raghurajpur is famous for Pattachitra paintings, palm-leaf engravings, stone carvings, and Gotipua dance. Visiting this village gives you a rare glimpse into Odisha's living art traditions.
Located 20 km from Puri, the Sakhi Gopal Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Gopal. The temple is associated with a beloved legend of devotion and is an important pilgrimage stop on most Puri tour packages.
This large sacred pond near the Jagannath Temple is the site of the annual Chandana Yatra (Sandalwood Festival) where effigies of the deities are taken out on a boat procession. It is a peaceful and spiritually significant spot.
India's applique craft capital, Pipili is a small town located 35 km from Puri on the Bhubaneswar-Puri highway. The colourful handmade fabric work here – used to make lampshades, wall hangings, garden umbrellas, and decoratives – makes for wonderful souvenirs.
Often combined with Puri packages, Bhubaneswar is the state capital and is home to over 700 ancient temples including the famous Lingaraj Temple, Mukteshwar Temple, and Rajarani Temple. It is also home to Nandankanan Zoological Park.
If there is one festival in India that you must witness at least once in your lifetime, it is the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri. This year, the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 falls on Thursday, July 16, 2026. The return journey, known as the Bahuda Yatra, takes place on Friday, July 24, 2026.
The Rath Yatra is the annual chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, a distance of approximately 3 kilometres along the Grand Road (Bada Danda) of Puri. Millions of devotees from across India and the world gather on this day to pull the sacred chariots and seek the Lord's blessings.
According to the Skanda Purana, witnessing the Rath Yatra, pulling the chariot ropes, or even hearing about the festival is believed to grant liberation from the cycle of rebirth (Moksha).
Planning to attend Rath Yatra 2026? Book your Puri trip well in advance as hotels fill up very quickly around this period. We have exclusive Rath Yatra tour packages that include priority accommodation near the Grand Road, guided assistance on the festival day, and complete Puri darshan.
